Starter Linkage hits Flywheel

I rebuilt the engine on my inherited 1952 TO30 and reinstalled the starter linkage and button that I bought off EBay with a bunch of transmission parts. Now when I start it with the shifter there is a loud clicking noise when in reverse. I couldn't figure out what was hitting until the other day it mad a louder click and now the linkage is in the button of the cavity. Does the shifter linkage that is the flat piece of steel need to be adjusted for each different tractor? Any ideas why it would not the back of the clutch assembly?

I figured someone with vastly more experience might chime in.

Ya'lost me there.
The problem I have run into is a worn shift handle engaging the starter with the engine running and shifting.

Sorry, the bar and starter finger attaches to the plate with the Cleveis pin is hitting the back of the pressure plate not the flywheel. The Assembly hits the rounded part of the pressure plate when the shifter is in reverse. I plan on shimming the plate that the finger attaches to up 1/8" up from the transmission.
Since in inherited the tractor I do not know if that is the original or a replacement pressure plate.
