Converting TE 20 from 6 to 12 volt

I am in U.K. as you know by now--i have been talking with someone who is converting an Original te 20 from 6 to 12 volt, he has changeddynamo and control box but did not touch starter and when he tried starting tractor he burnt out starter so what went wrong as thought starter would cope with 12 volts thanks for. replies

Possibly the starter was already on the verge of failure, the extra voltage just finished it off.

Are you sure it has actually burned the windings? Could be a bad internal connection, brushes, etc.

I have seen mechanical damage from slamming the drive, but never actually seen one burn up. I guess it would be possible if it were cranked on long enough.

12V did not burn it out. 12V just made it spin twice as fast. A properly tuned engine will fire right up and that 6V starter will last for years. I have about 10 years on my conversion. However, cranking more than 30 seconds at a time to star the engine will rapidly overheat that unit. My tractor fires up in less than 5 seconds after sitting for a month or two.
Was that tractor properly tuned?

Has your friend tried jumping directly from battery to the starter post (TRACTOR OUT OF GEAR AND KEY OFF)? I would suspect loose or dirty battery connections first.

Thanks for replies
