Ferguson TO-20 Charging fixed!

Okay thanks for the responses just put everything back together today fixed up generator, new wiring and new voltage regulator. My mechanic
that rebuilt my generator gave me a new voltage regulator for 70 bucks. That my seem like a god one but the new one I just bought was fried.
He said that the cheaper ones for about 35 dollars witch I had the inside of them melts when you make a jumper wire for polarizing the
voltage regulator. But, he polarized the new one for me and I already put it on. So anyways I put everything back together and installed
fired it up and checked the voltage with a multi meter on the battery set in DCV 20. And at first it measured about 6.7 to 7.1. But then
when I ran it a little longer and turned on and off the lights the voltage incready to about 9.1 with the light on. And about 8.7 or a
little higher with no lights on. So I am pretty happy with that now all I have to do it put brad new 6 volt headlights on the front. I have
just the rear work light working now, also getting new bulb and lens for the rear tail light on the other fender. Thanks again for

That's too high!

For a 6 volt battery, you should not see more than 7.3 volts while being charged (14.6 for a 12v battery), unless the weather is really cold. Charging to 8.7 volts (2.9 per cell) will damage and eventually ruin the battery. Delco recommended range for tractors is 6.6 to 7.2 (per bulletin 1R-185).

Keeping an eye on electrolyte and adding distilled water to keep the level up will help postpone ruin, but the overcharge will still be damaging the plates. You'll also get a lot of corrosion in the vicinity, as the escaping (explosive!) gases tend to carry tiny droplets of acid along with them.
 
Yes I thought is was a little high. But yesterday I started it after installing the 2nd light on it with the lights on it is about 5.99 now.
and with the lights off it charges to about almost 7 volts.
 
Well, that's certainly better, but now kind of on the low side. I'd check again after running at speed for awhile; possibly the low readings are just because the battery is down a bit.

But 6.3 is the break-even point for a charged battery; below that, the battery is either being discharged or is already discharged.
 
Okay thanks sounds good I will check again. It did that the first time I started it. It started charging around 6.3 to 6.7 then it went up
to 8 and 9 volts. But, yes I will check it again, its like the voltage regulator kicked in and gave the battery more juice because of the
lights were on trying to make up for the lost voltage from the lights.
