Ferguson TO-20 Battery Charging?

I am rewiring my 49 ferguson TO-20 and had a question, I took the battery out of it the other day so I don't have any problems grounding out. I decided to put it on my 6 volt charger because my charging system hasn't been working properly lately. I put it on tonight and it stopped charging at 6.35 volts? I have charged it before and it has done the same thing? Is this normal or should it be higher? I know when the tractor is running the battery voltage should read with a Multi Meter around 7.2 volts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The 6.35 volts is correct for your fully charged battery. The higher voltage when running is the output from the generator. This was an interesting question so I went looking and found that the cells of a battery hold 2.1-2.2 volts per cell. A 6 volt battery has 3 cells and a 12 volt has 6. Multiply by 2.1 or 2.2 and you have your fully charged voltage.
