Te 20 charging light??

Someone I know is having problems with his TE20
It is an early model with continental engine
It was 6 volts but converted to 12 many years ago
There is problem with charging as when the engine
revs are increased the ignition light comes on but
goes out when engine is shut down .... the dynamo
Has been checked and is ok , a new control box
and ignition light and switch has been fitted but fault
Persists
Thanks in advance for all replies

Check that the wire from 'A' on the control box to the starter switch (or solenoid if so equipped) is in good condition. This wire carries the full current from the generator, so a bad connection or damage to the wire can cause the generator voltage at the control box to be higher than the battery voltage.

If that isn't it, you'll need to do some testing. The dash light basically compares the voltage from terminal 'D' on the control box, to the voltage coming off the ignition switch. With the generator working normally, those two points should both link back to the battery, so be at the same voltage (within a few tenths of a volt anyway).

Once it senses that the generator is working, the control box should link 'D' to 'A'. If D is rising above A, your new control box has dirty cutout contacts inside. (Not at all unusual for new mechanical boxes to need cleaning and adjustment after installation.)

If the voltage on D is rising substantially above 14 volts or so, you may have a short between the wires to the generator.
