Short to ground?

I have a 1950 TO 20 Ferguson that will not fire or turn over the engine. The battery showed 6 volts until I turn on the switch. Then the battery goes to l less than 2 volts if I turn the switch back off the battery builds back up. If I read from the regulator to ground the same thing happens. I have been unable to find the short. I hate to throw parts at it but I have replaced the voltage regulator, the coil and no improvement. I removed the starter and disconnect the generator still no help.
Any ideas would be appreciated and thanks for the help.

More likely a bad battery or weak connection than a short. If there were a short, something would be heating up, smoking...

Put your volt meter leads directly on the battery posts, not the cable ends, but the posts.

Turn on the ignition or push the starter lever, watch the meter.

If it drops to near zero, the battery is bad or discharged. Try slow charging it, have it load tested.

If the voltage stays high, start moving one volt meter lead at a time until you find the voltage drop. Be systematic, remember what you have checked. Most likely it will be a loose or corroded connection.

If the ground strap is still attached to the sheet metal, that is a good place to start looking. Check the cable connections at the starter switch.

Be careful, when holding the starter lever, it could begin cranking without warning!
