TO35 Hydraulic Lift Piston leak? Need to confirm pls.

Hello,

For the past year my TO35 has had a hard time lifting a 3pt landscape blade, today I got a chance to remove both side covers and I took a video an picture

I would like to confirm I have a Hydraulic Lift Piston leak before ordering parts.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that is excessive leakage.

The piston has iron rings. Chances are the cylinder is scored and the piston is galled.

But won't know until you get it apart.

The top cover is very heavy, best use a lift.

Be sure to remove the correct bolts, some hold the cylinder, they stay in. The others around the edge come out.

The control linkage goes all the way down to the valve, be careful to lift the cover straight up, as the linkage is fragile and complex.

With the cover off, the pump is easily accessible. This would be a good time to take the pump out and look it over. If the lift was jerky and slow, the pump needs attention. The valves are known to fail. There is also a pressure relief valve on the pump. It may need replacing, they are known to rust pit and leak.

There are 2 different piston bore sizes and pressures on that tractor. The smaller bore is the low pressure system. That relief valve is not available. There is a difference in the structure of the top cover. Using a high pressure relief valve or large bore cylinder has the potential to break the early style top cover.

And, while it's apart, this would be a good time to replace the draft link boot under the seat. Not an easy job, but easier with the cover off. Without a good boot water will get in the cases.

If you don't have a shop manual, it will come in very handy during this procedure.

With respect to others and the understanding that TO35's are not really that common in Australia , I am not sure that this is a hydraulic piston problem . There is an O ring that seals the riser pipe connection into the lift cover . This is a common failure point , it's worth reading the manual re this , it may possibly be a problem fixed in under an hour with 40 cents worth of O ring .

Thanks to those that replied, I will replace the orings on the stand pipe, but I don't believe they are leaking because they are on the dipstick side cover.

The steady leak in the video is from the PTO cover side.

Since its already pretty warn I will refill for now and save the job to pull the cover and replace piston for late fall/winter.

I think the pump is ok because the lift action is steady, I'm certain there is wear after 63 years of service :)

I also have a Massey 50 as a parts tractor I will decide if I take to whole top cover from it and simply bolt it on the TO35.

I can not reiterate enough the necessity of reading a service manual.

Here are pictures from the "YT" archives of a TO-35 that the owner purchased, with no idea of the consequences, started the Tractor and thus the end result.

Your $$$$$'s can be drained in a flash of a second. If you remove the Top Lift cover you may whish to be sure of the removal and Installation procedure.

All the best...

Bob.....

I took the top cover off and found the source of my problem, the piston and rings are badly scored, I will get the parts to replace it.
