Got a 48 harry Ferguson to20. It's hard stuck in 3rd gear. Shift fork wont budge. Pulled off gearbox cover to try and see if it's in two gears....cant tell. Had this happen before but I could manually move everything almost effortlessly and realigned everything and went back to tractoring. Now....cant move anything. Happened while driving. Was in 3rd, pressed clutch as I was needing to slow.....went to depress clutch and the engine bugged down and almost died. Repressed clutch, engine revved back up. Went to depress again and...bog down. No forward or backward movement at all, just bog down. Tried to tow it around to my garage to work on it.....wont budge!! Jacked up rear end, tires move opposite directions freely with clutch in or out. No gears in gear box turn at all. Nada!. Tractor is in a field, cant move it, and stuck in gear.

When looking in the top, try rolling the tractor or turn the rear wheel, look very closely for "some" movement.

If there is slight movement, it is probably in 2 gears. Something must have failed to prevent it from coming out when prying on the gear slides.

If no movement at all, probably a bearing has seized, locked the transmission and it is in a bind.

Ferguson Transmission.....
My experience is such that when a CLUTCH disc becomes worn (thinner) the operators may have to place more force on the gear shift to change gears.
Also, as more play becomes evident in the point where the Gear shift enters the KEY WAY of each individual shifter fork, a high degree of possibility occurs that the transmission can and will end up in two GEARS.

I?ve had two Fergusons to work on, both had FAILED SECOND GEAR shifter forks due to two much force applied to the gear shifter as the CLUTCH DISC was worn thin.

So how can I fix it? I mean ultimately replace thr clutch and fix 1st and 2nd gear, but I can't do that in the field. How can I un jam it to even move it?

Good morning...

When my Neighbour had a situation like you have ...I used my CASE 970 Tractor with loader ...placed chains from the front axel upwards...placed chains from the rear axel housings up wards...attached to my Case 970 bucket and moved tractor to the shop.

If you had a DOLLY place Rear Tires on Dolly and move to your work location..
