I Want To Rebuild My Z129

Hello all. My 1951 TO30 is getting tired and not feeling well. I want to help it! This tractor was rebuilt by my uncles back in the 80's and hasn't been used much other than by me in the last 10 years and it's mainly just a little plowing such as the garden or maybe bushhogging 5 acres. It's been having a smoking problem for a little while now and I originally thought maybe it was valve guides and seals so I had the head rebuilt and it did help some but it still smokes and when it does smoke it misses pretty bad. The oil pressure runs around 25 pounds at first start up then drops down to around 10 when warmed up. When the head was off there was quite a bit of oil on top the #1 and #4 pistons. I thought maybe it had ran down the bad valve guides but I'm still getting oil in the cylinders because it's on the spark plugs and they were a little loose after first starting it and I could see where oil had worked out around the threads on the plugs. It all boils down to me wanting to rebuild it. I have been doing my own mechanic work for over 35 years and there isn't much I haven't done other than rebuilding an engine. I have no doubt of my ability to do this I just need a little guidance as to the correct procedure. Is there a manual or a write up that someone has done that will explain the rebuild step by step? I have the I&T manual but is there something better?

It really is an easy engine to rebuild. There is a service manual here on the parts site for this tractor. I use both that one and the IT one. Consider an oil pump kit too for the rebuild.

The I&T manual is sufficient for someone with mechanical experience.

The engine has free standing liners, they are intended to be replaced as assemblies, not bored.

Fitting them in a perfectly cleaned block is essential to get the proper deck height.

The oil pumps were known to fail, check the drive pin area carefully. Sounds like it had good oil pressure.

The blocks are known to crack internally between the cylinder webs, visually check that carefully.

Otherwise, they are fully rebuildable and parts available.

Have fun!

What can't be accomplished doing an in-frame rebuild, main seals? I know not to order any bearings until all specs are checked but I sure wish I could find a manual with a step by step procedure. I've rebuilt carburetors, hydraulic pumps, starters, alternators, guns, air compressors, differentials and many other things. I'm not worried about my mechanical ability but do like to do things in the proper order.

(quoted from post at 20:43:05 07/08/19) but I sure wish I could find a manual with a step by step procedure.

Do a search for grey fergie forum. Look in the Downloads section. There is a full manual and parts list available there. But look at the Triumph TR3 manual. It has a very good step by step procedure. The TR2/3 series used the same Standard engine block as the TEA20's.

Your are correct that you cannot change the rear seal without pulling the engine. If you have use of an engine hoist or even chain fall it can be done very easily and also give you a chance to inspect the clutch as that and the flywheel will be coming off too.

Good morning...As you become Baptised by the Ferguson Tractor....please be aware ...Ferguson Tractors were supplied with CONTINENTAL ENGINES as well as the STANDARD ENGINE.

Theses two Engines are NOT in any way the same.
Do not make the mistake of using any reference material from the incorrect Engine.

Pictures are of the STANDARD ENGINE:

Your TOPIC ........ I Want To Rebuild My Z129...the Z129 Engine is "NOT" the STANDARD ENGINE.
