Hello.

I recently found out that my ted 20 has a 6v engine and 12v gearbox and i need to fit a starter motor. I ordered and now has arrived a 12v lucus starter motor but there seems to be a gap and wont sit flush.

I heard there needs to be some modifications to make them fit and work?

Can i still use a 6v engine and 12v gearbox together?[/img]

Someone else had this problem some time ago ..I think the bolt holes won't line up as well due to the 6 v having a different pattern ...may also have problems meshing the starter drive .I think the conversion
can be done though, but requires drilling new mounting holes ? -Some try to do the reverse of what you are doing & that is, trying to put a 12 V Engine on a 6v Gearbox !! Definately a NO go -Did the tractor
have a starter motor fitted when you got it or did you buy without one hence the problem

Yeh its all so confusing. And sadily didnt not have a starter motor when i got it. Nor did the guy i got it from tell me about the different gearbox. Ill have to find someone who is doing what im doing as i have no clue what im doing haha.

Don't give up As I think it can be done ! Enclosed photo of a 6v Engine & Starter motor ..much bigger so you can compare with yours .I think you can still buy 6 V Starter motors & use a 12 V system ..the starter motors are pretty tough -I have an Old 6 v Tractor but converted to 12 v & don't have any problems ..consider taking the starter back for a refund or get them to order a 6 v one & you have it solved ! Sad that the bloke who sold it to you was a bit devious

Have a look on line -You can buy a 6 V Starter motor or a 12v that fits the 6 V configuration ...Problem solved either way !

Okay mate awesome cheers.
Ive seen the 6v to 12v conversion starters that should be the same size as 6v. Might give that one ago next and see what happens.

But cheers you've been soo helpful!

Also the pic attached is what the one i got looks like

I would concentrate more on finding a starter that will fit than the voltage. Either voltage will work on 12v.

Unless there is a known solution, I would not go drilling holes or assuming something will fit and work, only to have it be a temporary fix that causes damage, or not work and have a damaged gear case.

Any chance the seller would have the starter laying around?

Good morning.....
Is the RING GEAR on your Tractor on the FORWARD/FWD side of the FLYWHEELL...OR ...on the REAR /AFT side of the FLYWHEEL?

Makes a HUGE difference in the Starter you must have .

The "English Ferguson Tractor" ( Harry Ferguson /Coventry England)with the "STANDARD ENGINE" was assembled with a Ring Gear on the FWD side of the Flywheel for the 6-Volt Starter application ...and then changed to an AFT ring gear for the 12 Volt starter application...

Two totally different designed Starters:

There is an after market 12 VOLT STATER that is a direct fit to replace the original 6 VOLT starter..
This starter engages with the Ring Gear on the FWD side of the original 6 Volt Flywheel:

Bob...Owner operator of Ferguson Tractors with the "Standard Engine"....

It was the wrong starter i got haha the ring gear was behind the fly wheel. But ive now ordered a 6v to 12v converted starter with the ring gear in front and will fit this engine as its the same size as 6v!
Should all work, fingers crossed!

But thank you all for the help :D
