Oil Change on a TO30

Out of curiosity always have put straight sae 30w motor oil in the tractor (engine) on my TO30. What's a close substitute to run in it if I couldn't get any 30w. Like would 20w50 or 10w40 work in it for the summer?

I run 10W-30 diesel rated oil in most of my engines, including a TO30 - it keeps life simpler here on the farm -

A lot of tractor enthusiasts use 15W-40, a commonly available oil -

straight 30W is fine except for being a bit thick for cold start situations when the temperatures get below 10*F

I'd judge it more important to keep the oil fresh than having a major debate about 10W-30 vs 15W-40 - brand name modern oil is of consistently good quality in my experience -

The oil you choose should match your climate or the temperature the tractor is most commonly operated in.

For warm weather, go with the 15w40, colder climate drop down to 10w30. If you still run a 6 volt system, and the oil pressure is good, you might want to go with the 10w30 for easier starts.

Whatever grade you choose, I would recommend using the diesel rated oil. it more closely matches the design of the older engines. The automotive gas engine oil is more designed for roller cams and emissions systems compliance.
