MF35 - Won't shift to 2nd or 3rd

I went to move my MF35, and couldn't get it into 2nd or 3rd gear.
First and reverse work like they always did.

The gear shift slides over to the right as it should. I can lift up or push down on it, and it will grind as if it's gonna go in gear. But it only moves up or down maybe 1/4", and hits a dead stop. When I let out on the clutch it just jumps back to neutral.

I've had the tractor stuck in first gear several time, and know how to get it out. But this is a new one on me.

Typically a transmission that will not engage a gear or two needs a clutch adjustment. I would be willing to bet you have a slight bit too
much free travel.

You may have a broken shift fork.

Sounds like a reasonable possibility.

I can't think of anything to do but take the top off the transmission and see what I can find.

Trouble is, I use the tractor regularly and don't have a warm place to work. So that makes it a bit more difficult.

I'll let ya know what I find out.

I had some time to mess with the tractor tonight.

First think I did was take the filler plug out and have a look:

I can use a screwdriver to shift it to 2nd and 3rd gear. It slides back and forth easily. But the shifter will still not move it.

I thought I'd pull the shift lever out and see if I could see anything. It came up this far and then stopped:

Been a long time since I pulled a shift lever. Is there something inside that holds it in? Once the cross pin has been removed I was thinking it pulled right out.

It's been 30 + years ..I had a broken gear shift.....portion that aligns with slots in sifter forks:

I do not remember if I had to remove the Transmission cover?

I do not remember if there was a "C" clip and a Spring arrangement on the inner end of the Gear shift??

My service manual is 2333 miles back at my summer residance:

I tried turning that thing, and it didn't move. Now I can't get the shifter to go back down where it should be.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Thought I'd post about how this turned out.

I don't have a good place to work on stuff. I ended up finding a shop that was willing to work on it, and took it to them.

I asked them to let me know when they had it apart so I could have a look and get some pictures. They didn't, which annoyed me.

The spring under the shifter was broken. That allowed the shifter to get out of where it should be.

The spring was in pieces and fell down in the oil. They drained the transmission oil to make sure they got all the pieces out. And refilled it with new oil.

When they put it back together the starter wouldn't work. So they rebuilt it.

The spring cost $4.75. Their total bill was $1,400.

Then when the tractor was done they parked it outside next to one of them green tractors. Seriously ------ me off, and I gave them an earful about it.

I've driven it several times since it came back home. The shifter is now very tight where it used to be kinda loose. I'm hoping that means it will never get stuck in gear again.

So aside from the high repair bill, it all ended well.
