14-AO-40 Slat Moldboard Plow

I've been talking to a local guy who is selling an early Ferguson 14-AO-40 plow and thought I'd share some photos. It has a four-digit serial number and looks complete to me, except for the jointers that seem to be missing. I'm certainly no plow expert, but see quite a bit of wear and corrosion on the shares and coulters in the hi-res photos. It's a fair bet we won't be finding those replacements at the local TSC! Then again all I'd ever plow with it is a fairly large garden, so it's likely worry over nothing.

I was thinking that an AO this early would have the furrow wheel that looks to be one piece, with no rivets showing, but I could be thinking about some other plow. What do you guys think, worth $250?

Nice find ghostdncr:
Location, quality, supply and demand plus other factors....then an agreeable sale price:
I was actively looking for a two bottom either Ferguson or Dearborn for our garden.
Purchased a Ferguson TEA-20 parts Tractor ..Plow was included in purchase. I valued plough at $200.00.
Purchased second identical make and Model...$200.00

Hope you end up with a great Plow for your soil conditions:

Bob..

No Coulters.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think the price is out of line for my area, based on other plows I've seen selling around here. You'll occasionally hear of someone picking up a cherry at an auction or out of somebody's flowerbed for a scrap price but in general, $2-300 seems to be the current range for one in this condition.

Good looking setup, Bob! My TO20 hasn't had an implement hooked to it since at least the mid-90's (the PO never owned any!) so I didn't pick up any extras when I bought it. I notice your R-bottom shares have the square heel just like the plow I'm looking at, but all the Ferguson literature I remember seeing about the AO's show the shares as having an angled, or swept heel. Any idea if these are original Ferguson parts or if they're an aftermarket replacement?

I'm a little leery of the slat moldboards on the plow in question, since almost every one I recall looking at has had at least one of the slats broken. My soil is not at all rocky and there's no old roots or anything to be concerned with, so I probably wouldn't have any problems. Still, I've gotta wonder why I've seen so many broken ones...

Nice OEM FERGUSON PLOW. Slatted moldboards no longer made but recently PLOWORX began offering the other general purpose shares for the early Ferguson-Sherman and Harry Ferguson Inc. plows. FWIW: These plows and implements were part of the Ferguson distributorship for Ford Motor Company to supply the 9N Ford-Ferguson 9N and 2N tractors. A 4-digit s/n would be valuable to have meaning it is an early unit. When Ferguson went to build his TE20 tractor and then the TO20 unit in Detroit, he had his own line of implements. In your pictures, the second one down, the jointer arms are attached wrong to the coulters.

I was thinking there was something odd about those jointer arms but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Thanks for pointing that out. I am a little intrigued by that four-digit serial number, too.

Does anyone have an idea what a plow like this would weigh? I seem to be able to manage around 500 lbs. before things start getting sketchy with my jury-rigged lifting equipment. Being somewhat fond of both life and limb, a reasonably accurate weight would be good to know going in. There seem to be guys on here set up to lift a D8 Caterpillar off a trailer, but I'm not one of them.

I recently came across this outfit selling Ferguson plow parts over in the UK. Prices seem reasonable enough, although I haven't contacted them to see if they'll even consider shipping to the US:

Overseas shipping costs remain a mystery to me. I've bought parts out of the UK/EU that came over at absurdly low rates and then similar-sized items where the shipping charges amounted to several times the cost of the parts.
