I have just got this tractor and needs a lot of work.my question is the steering box ,manual is in bad shape.i have seen pictures of F40's with power steering.being i have parts to replace on the existing manual steering,i would like to make it power steering.I have looked at 35's and steering is completely differant on those compared to th f40.is this possible?Have never dealt with a MF this old

in would guess the pump is the same but beyond that not much in common.

Assuming your engine has the blank cover for a pump, mounting a pump would be the easy part.

If you have everything to rebuild your manual gear, you could keep that and add an assist cylinder and directional valve to the tie rod, think 60's Ford passenger cars that had a cylinder underneath.

Or find a donor tractor and convert everything to factory. That may cost more (depending on the deal you can find) but in the end would be a better way to go.

ooked at some pictures last night and looks like the whole power steering is done in front of radiator/with the pump, resvior ,and lines as you have mentioned...but that assy would be very hard to find and as you say the assist may be the only option...i still will have to repair the steering wheel box reguardless...thanks for your input

To add PS on the F40 you will have to replace everything inside grill and add pump.
If you can find a salvage tractor-F40 or early MF65 and know it is good then it's not
that big of job.The early 65's that has MHF will work not sure on the early MF50. Yes
it's completely different from a 35.

Was this p/s design good or was it a poor steering....i have never driven a f40 period, manual or power steering..MF didn't stay with it long, thanks

It was a good design. The F40 became the MF 50 in 1958. Same tractor. The early 50 PS should work on your tractor. I've never changed one using the 50 but have used the early MF65 PS.

I think the 65's use a straight cut gear on the end of the ps pump that meshes with the internal gear where both the 40 and 50 having the Z134 use a spiral cut gear. That gear will have to come off another 134 with ps. I put an early 65 ps unit onto a gas 50 and missed the bolster gear timing and steering is off in one direction. Also the 65's reservoir has to be remounted and won't fit inside the grill.

Good to know info, took pan off tonight and crankshaft is broken into so i guess i have plenty to do..think it will better to get another engine and build it..this one appears to have ran with the shaft broke so the oil flow loss did a number..thanks for the p/s info
