TO 35 oil pump rebuild

All,
I recently ordered a oil pump rebuild kit and found the rear plate was scored badly.
So, I ordered a new rear plate.... Problem is the new plate came with a machined recess in the center and my old plate did not have that recess.
I would like you all's opinion as to which side that recess goes to. It will go over either side if you just rotate the plate.

I have talked to the experts at Montes in (I think Wis) and he said he could not tell me.
Thanks
Jim

If the cover has countersunk mounting screws like most do, that will determine how it fits. Most pump covers with a center groove place the groove next to the gears.

Thank you for your reply.
However the countersunk holes will work either way you rotate the plate.
I should have done a better explaination of what I was needing:
Does the recess go over the inlet side of the gears or the outlet "pressure" side of the gears.
Thank you,
Jim

The original cover plate had the screw holes closer to the edge on one end so the plate would only fit the pump body one way. See if yours is like that. Pump covers with relief grooves are usually centered between the gears, so I doubt shifting the groove a bit either way won't make any difference.

the recessed area is off to the side of the backing plate. I agree with the recess needing to be towards the gear side.
However my new backing plate will fit either way all holes line up (countersunk) you can put the recess over the pressure side (or the side the relief valve is on or the suction side.
I called the place I got the plate from and he said he would go out and pull a pump apart to make sure he told me correctly. Well he did and actually took a pic of it and that recess was on the pressure side of the pump gears.

Anyone think any different?
Thanks again,
Jim
