Installing the oil pan on a TEA 20 (85 mm)

When installing the aluminum oil pan on a TEA 20, do you use a gasket adhesive, gasket sealant or RTV gasket maker etc. when using the heavy paper gasket? If you do, what make & type do you use. Do you apply it to the pan and put on the gasket, then apply to the gasket and install pan on block. How do you ensure that none gets into the interior of the engine? Some recommend applying grease (some specify bearing grease) to both sides of the gasket and then install pan with gasket to block. Do you do the same for the oval access plate for the oil strainer? Any tips, advice etc. appreciated. Thanks, Ron

I always use #2 permatex and put light coat on pan just to hold it in place. Pan only this way you can always clean it if you need to later date. Never on block. #2 will not get hard as #1 will set up.

miner09, Do you brush the #2 on the pan or the gasket? Do you do anything to the gasket surface facing the block? What about gasket adhesive or Ultra Black?

I use Permatex as well , nothing better in my opinion .
What I do is use a full sheet of gasket paper , I brush the Permatex onto the sump gasket surface and invert it onto the whole sheet while resting on a smooth MDF surface , then weight it heavily . I wait until the next day before carefully cutting the gasket along the sump inside edge first , then the outside , then the stud holes. When installing the gasket will not shift , coat the upper surface with a little grease and it will seal beautifully and be easily removed without tearing . You will thank yourself that one day in the future when you have to get in there again , it will come off in one piece and will most likely be able to be reused .

Does anyone have the torque specifications for the TEA 20 (85 mm displ.) clutch, oil pan, head, flywheel etc. bolts from an original service manual? If you do could you scan the chart or documentation and send it to me here? I would like to know if there is a torque spec for the aluminum oil pan with steel vbolts and a paper gasket. I will also need the flywheel and clutch specs, as well as the torque for the bolts that join the bell housing to the engine block after a tractor split in the next couple of days. Thanks, Ron

Only Torque Specs that you requested in my ORIGINAL FERGUSON SERVICE MANULS:

If the Crankshaft THRUST is outside MAX limits....the longevity of the Timing Chain and Sprockets shall be compromised:

Head....60 > 65 FT. LBS

Flywheel....42 > 46 FT. LBS.
