Ford N Series Similarities

This question comes from someone who is very uninformed. How similar/ dissimilar are Ferguson TO tractors to Ford N tractors?
Too big or vague of a question?
Are any parts interchangeable?
Were Sherman or other third-party trans available?
Thanks.

Ferguson had some say in the design of the early N's, since he was in partnership with
Henry Ford. The reason Ford could get the tractor into the market so quickly was that he
adapted many of his Ford truck parts into the tractor, thus saving tooling cost and time,
as well as development engineering. The engine was half of a flathead V8, for example.
A four cylinder crankshaft had to be incorporated. Ford had quit designing new four cylinders
for the domestic market with the 34 Ford. However, smaller engines were still being developed
for the English and German Fords. And there were numerous industrial engines on the market
that provided quick reference points for the tractor.

When Ford split away from Ferguson, he (Ferg.) had to find his own sources of parts. He got a package of blue-prints from Ford, so the engineering was basically finished. He used an overhead valve engine, purchased from Continental. By the release of the NAA, Ford also used an overhead valve engine.

One of the longest lasting differences was the way the radius rods splayed out on a Ferguson, but not
on a Ford. That patent was defended until the early 1960's.

Sherman Brothers oversaw the manufacture of attachments for Ferguson. Pretty much what would work on one would work on the other. They were also dealers for Ford, and had attachments built for Fordson Majors.

A few tractor parts will interchange, such as wheels, and maybe lift arms.

Ferguson kept his hydraulics the same as the 9n/2n so most of that with interchange along with a few other parts but for the most part ferguson did not want ford parts on his ferguson and designed it that way. Sherman bros made a sherman trans designed for the ferguson. The sherman built for the ferguson will fit in the ford but the sherman built for the ford will not fit in the ferguson. Best to ask about a certain part to see if it will interchange.

You can also get a Hupp trans to fit in as well as an Everett and also a Howard trans that are both designed to use a rototiller. Without them the rear tires move too fast for the tiller to properly operate.
As was mentioned, the hydraulics will interchange between the Ford 9N/2N/Ferguson TO-20 and the TO-30.
If you change out the top cover and pump, then you can also incorporate the 8N hydraulics into any of those machines.
The 8N giving you position control without externally adding any modifications.
As for the Hupp combo trans, it is similar to the Sherman combo in the later designs however but it did come in two gear variations.
The Sherman and one of the Hupps did share an approx 25 MPH top speed, Hupp did produce a version with a 15 MPH top speed and a greater lower speed. Hupps were also initially prone to breaking gears inside as well as hanging between ranges when shifting from one to another.
That condition was rectified by either changing the shift forks or raising one wheel off the ground and working the shift levers.

Pick up a parts book for the TO20 and TO30 it includes the 9n and 2n ford series. Many of the parts behind the transmission are the same, just renumbered for Ford or Ferguson. Two years ago I restored a 9N and the Ferguson presence was easily recognized. Including the 11/16? nut and bolt heads.
