T0 20 Carburetor Leaking Gas

FT3

Hello,

Our 1949 TO 20 is leaking gas from the place where the choke linkage enters the carburetor...I think.

If so, is this a relatively common issue?

Is there a seal of some kind that can be replaced to correct it? If there isn"t a seal to replace, how can it be repaired please?

Thank you!
Rick

First thing you need to do is check your engine oil and make sure it is not full of gas. God chance your float is sticking or you have dirt etc. in the needle seat. When ever you park a tractor it is a good idea to shut off the gas valve at the sediment bowl or t can end up with gas in the oil and then if you run it hat way you can blow the engine.

Yes, good chance the float valve is stuck. If you replace the valve, I have had good luck with the black tipped ones. The red tipped seam to expand with the ethanol gas and then stick closed.

There should never be gas there to leak.

The needle valve failed to stop the fuel when the bowl was full.

If you take the air filter tube off, liquid gas will probably flow out.

Depending on how much fuel leaked, it could have overflowed into the cylinders and diluted the engine oil. Be sure to check for high oil level, and liquid locked cylinders before trying to start it!

The needle valve could have leaked because of trash in the valve, a bad seat, or a sunk float.

It may be a very minor leak that can be lived with if you turn the fuel valve off after each use. Something you might try, close the fuel valve, remove the drain plug from the bottom of the carb, let the fuel drain. Replace the plug, open the fuel valve. Some times that will flush out any trash that may have been caught in the needle valve.

Hello, what is a ?liquid locked cylinder?, and how do you check for that please?

Thank you,
Rick

Liquid lock is not the correct term. Hydro lock is the correct term and that happen when 1 or more cylinder get filled with a liquid like gas or coolant and then when you try to start it the engine will appear to be locked up. If that happen one needs to pull all the spark plugs out but make sure you know which plug wire goes where or you will mess up the firing order. Then once the plugs are out you try to spin it over. If hydro locked what ever was in the cylinders will be shot out of them as the engine spins over

Thank you.

There wasn?t any gas in the oil.

I removed the plug on the bottom of the carb, drained it.

It?s not leaking now and seems to be running pretty good.

You probably had a piece of dirt or rust in the float needle valve so when you drained the carb you flushed it out with the gas you drain so then your problem went away. Some time simple thing fix big headaches
