To30 governor...

Hey all, I am a little unfamiliar with the continental engine on the To30 ... Even though i have the IT manual for it, it’s a little vague. So here’s my question, my ferguson seems to lack a little power and going up a hill in first gear at a near idle, it start hogging down. Should t the governor kick in and give it a little more pep? I started looking the governor settings over and reset it according to the manual. While I was messing with it I noticed somthing odd...the governor operating lever or illustration number 6 on page 13 on the IT manual, goes more up and down than back and forth... upon further inspection it seems he operator shaft bearings( illustration 7 on page 12) have some play allowing it to do so... are those replaceable? Also is the play I am experiencing normal? Thanks!

I don't have the IT manual here, but the governor shaft, where it passes through the front cover, that needs to be a good fit. Slack there will cause erratic operation and oil leakage around the shaft. Not sure if there is a bushing, but a bushing could be added if needed. If you do go into the front cover, be sure to check the ball cage for cracks. They are known for breaking.

If you are asking about the pivot on the shaft from the dash lever, slack up there is not a big deal. Adjusting the position of the dash lever will compensate for it. but if somehow it is excessively loose a bushing could be installed.

Might check the length adjustment on the rod from the governor to the carb. Sometimes that is adjusted too short, out of range of the governor travel. Also try backing the damper screw out to get some more travel.

Look 18 posts back at "TO-35 throttle/governor linkage adjustment". I covered the rod length adjustment procedure there. Though his problem was a run away condition, the adjustment is the same. A TO-30 is also the same as a 35.

How much play is in the shaft at the linkage? Did you go through the whole procedure for setting the spring linkage and the carb to governor
linkage. It is a process but with a good running engine you will have it set up so the throttle works properly. Also, did you see if the governor
works correctly? Stand on the side and carefully while engine running advance the throttle to full and watch if Governor is kicking in early. It is
really there to limit engine speed. If setting is out it will also act to not let engine rev up under load, which is what you have. That is where the
set screw on the other side is culprit for not being set correctly.
I believe the other post with the TO35 outlines similar procedures for the settings

thanks guys! I did go 8 posts back and read that... took a picture on my phone of the conversation that way I’d have it.. I also reset the set screw on the other side of the engine.. governor is operating properly now... I thank you both for your invaluable information. Sometimes experience beats the tar out of an IT manual.. glad I found this site!
