A question regarding this archived post... http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=ferg&th=133088

Bob, is that sealant on the block surface where the rear main seal seal would fit? What type did you use? Do you normally use sealant with a rear main seal?

Hi Ron...Yes the BLUE is an AUTOMOTIVE BLUE SILCONE sealer:

I have never "read" as to use a sealant in the bore or around the rear Crankshaft oil seal....I do however use a sealer as per these pictures:

The pictures make it look mas if I use a HUGE amount of sealer.......in fact use the sealer sparingly:

I would also apply a very thin amount at each side of the seal bore under the back of the main cap.

A lot of rear main leaks are caused from pressurized oil traveling from the bearing area, going under the cap.

Also seal the side packings between the cap and the block, especially down in the corner.

Not sure if I know where you mean. Are you suggesting sealant around the bearing cap bolt hole in the block?

Are you letting the silicone dry before installing the seal? Or gluing the seal in place?

I apply blue oil resistant silicone to the bore as per pictures, then assemble seal, rear bearing cap and rear oil seal retainer so as seal is glued in place?
