H engine dipstick

I recently took possession of a '39 H my Great Grandfather bought brand new. I have been around this tractor my entire life. In talking to a guy I will be buying some parts for a general going threw. I mentioned my tractor has a dipstick. He tells me H's never had dipsticks and it has to have a 300 or 350 engine. I never knew of an engine swap, but anything is possible I guess. In checking engine numbers, it is the original engine, casting date 11-8-39. The dip stick passes threw the block. What I'm wondering is what is the true story here? The tractor was a demonstrater before Roy bought it so my guess was a dipstick was an option being showcased on the demonstrater. Since the H's had the check peckcocks, my guess is nobody bought the dipstick option. If my guess is wrong, please correct me because if this is a rare little option, I'd like my facts straight in talking about the tractor.

I've got a 47 H that has a dip stick. The hole through the block does not have a pipe sticking out or it. The dipstick just goes flat against the block. The H was a very popular tractor. I'm sure they were quite a few companies making accessory parts for those tractors in the forty's and fifty's.

Yep, I did it on my 1950 "H". Realized I was never checking the petcocks. I removed the oil pan to see where I was, and figured out the angle, and then drilled 1/8" hole about an inch or so, in the boss you mention, removed and over-drilled 3/16". Then went back and drilled 1/8" another inch down, over-drilled that 3/16, etc., til I got drilled all the way through. Object beng to not break off a dril bit. Drilled 1/4", etc., til I got all the way through, about 2 1/2" of cast iron. Threaded in a pipe nipple, probably 3/8" dia., and used I believe it was a Ford dipstick. Works great. Misses the crankshaft by about 3/4".

IHC engines even in the F-12 etc had a boss to locate a dip-stick. The I-12 and Fairway 12 reactors had dip-stick and my O-12 has the location for a dip-stick on the block. My 1948 Farmall Super A block has a location for a dip-stick but if it was fitted you would have to use a remote pressure gauge. My 1841 W-4 had been fitted with a dip-stick in the boss for such a stick but it was not a genuine IHC dipstick so when the engine was being rebuilt I had the dip-stick removed and the boss plugged, If I ever find a genuine dip-stick I may put it back.

Does it look like this one? If not there were several aftermarket ones and IH sold them to install in H, M ETC. with a drilling diagram at one time after they started installing them in 300 and 400 blocks kind of early in production. Could also have the power unit type.

Don't have it. Found this instruction diagram for installing a dipstick tube and dipstick in a 4 series block. uses the dipstick and tube like used on all 300 utility and 350 tractors and most F-300. Hope its readable.

To the best of my knowledge, the castings had no dipstick "boss" to drill until blocks were made to be used in power units and replacement blocks. Show us a picture it sounds interesting. Jim

That's actually really intersting. Never seen one but anything is possible to modify and there are all kinds of different options they tried and demo'd but never made it past that point.

There were aftermarket dipstick kits and some on here have drilled and made custom ones.

The dipstick goes threw a boss in the block in front of the oil filter housing on the right side. If its an aftermarket kit, it is a very installation. 100% looks like it is suppose to be there. I never gave it a thought before since this is the only Farmall I ever checked oil on. The oil pan does have peckcocks.
