Another 340 Hydraulic Question.

I've been thinking about the valve block that came on my 340 utility loader. I don't think I can live without a float position for the boom. I have been looking on eBay for a double spool valve and think I have it narrowed down. What I need to know is if this one will work with the 340 hydraulics?

The thing that confuses me is open center/closed center hydraulics. I tried to read up on the two, but the only thing I got out of the experience was dizzy.

Your 340 has an open center system. You will want an open center hydraulic valve.

Open center means that the fluid circulates under low pressure when all the spool valves are in the center position. This is how early hydraulic systems worked. If flow is blocked and can't go anywhere such as through a motor or into a cylinder, the relief valve pops off and relieves the pressure. If the relief valve fails, hoses blow, pump housings split, etc..

Closed center means the hydraulic fluid stays at high pressure and does not circulate. It is a much more complicated system requiring a variable-displacement pump and an accumulator, but it provides instant response to the hydraulics. Most tractors made from the 1980's on have closed center systems.

His tractor has different valves on it now to control the loader. I do not know if the hydro touch pilot regulator has been defeated or a different arrangement made to make it pure open center. So choosing a valve might reauire a knowledgeable hydraulics person to look at it. Not all after market open center valves have the float he desires. Jim

I gave up on the hydraulic valve that came with the loader, and ordered a new one with a float setting. Why anyone would put a hydraulic valve, with no float, on a loader is beyond me. It must have been for a special purpose. But it's useless for moving snow on a uneven surface.
