farmall H questions

my brother just got a farmall H, ser no 175554X. Haven't even unloaded off trailer yet and wondering about some info on it. according to ser no appears to be a '44 model. Why the X after the serial no. and on the left side is two pipe fittings that appear to be hydraulics with one on the right side. Book to be ordered soon but still full of questions, first red tractor. would appreciate any shared knowledge from you good people...we are located in south La. thanks again. Mike.

The pipe fittings are for hydraulics. Either one of the three can be used for single acting cylinders. There is no down pressure on them.

The suffixes after the x will determine the options (if it had any).

Examples: gas only, low speed gears, high speed gears etc.

As for the hydraulics: Any of the pipe 3 ports can be used but there is a delay with the rear port on the left side. This was on purpose for when front mount cultivators were used. The sections that trailed the rear wheels would be plumbed into that delayed port so that they would raise and drop after the front mounted cultivators would which would be plumbed into the front ports. In short, use the front ports on either side.

The lift-all hydraulics (also known as the 'belly pump') is a self-contained, single-acting pump. Like the PTO and belt pully, it is not independent of the clutch. I believe the lever can control each port individually or all the way back to power all three.

The pressure is fairly low on these guys, starting out in '39 with 500psi and later being boosted to 800psi. With a fairly low flow rate to boot, don't expect to do anything too fast or fancy with the pump.

By putting a tee in place of the drain plug, you can then plumb in a modern spool valve and have dual-acting hydraulics, which will be handy.

The Farmall manual does not cover the belly pump very well, advising to take it to the dealer if something goes wrong. There is a technician book that covers rebuilding it, i found a reproduction of it floating around on ebay.
