M Carb Adjustment

Does anyone have a good set of instructions for adjusting the carb/choke on a M. Mine ran fine all last year. This year it will run fine one minute and spit/sputter/die the next. Playing with the choke/throttle will sometimes make a difference when it starts running rough. First guess is that the problem is air flow.

Fuel flow must be checked first. If the sediment bowl and lines to the carb flow free, and the needle and seat in the float bowl are opening and closing reliably, the issue might be crud buildup in the carb over winter. To see if it is the air cleaner, remove the hose at the carb. (If it is old, be prepared to replace it, they get brittle. Jim

and to add, the main fuel jet on bottom should be open 2 1/2 - 3 turns.
the mixture screw should be 3/4 - 1 turn open.
with this setting the tractor will run for any beginner not familiar with carb adjustments or how to go about it. fine tuning is always good though. you can even remove the 1/8 plug at bottom of carb and catch gas in clean container and this may flush out some garbage also.
