Square Chain Tool

After spending over $20 to purchase a square chain tool on line and not being willing to wait for it to arrive I came up with a good way to use tools on hand to break a square chain in minutes and not bend the links or bust any knuckles. It takes a 16 oz. straight claw hammer (curved claw will not work), a small vice, a nail, a second hammer, a small counterweight, and a punch. The nail is to keep the link from being driven down into the hammer groves. Have fun.

I just use a vise to hold the chain and either a dull fat chisel or a large round punch to knock them apart...but I like your hammer idea as well, especially smaller flat chain.

Now look at all of this talent just ozzing around here. VERy clever and easy. Good job. When you get the real thing you will just love how it will pop the links apart.

That is way more stuff than you need. Basically all you need is a hammer and a solid place to hit, and just drive apart. That is all the chain tool I ever used for year's, and never bent a one. Might have hit a finger or two though.

If you get some of the new chain you will need a tool. It was not made the same as the old chain. I agree that all you needed was a hammer and a place to hit with old stuff but the drums on this new chain are crimped so tight that you will need a tool . . . unless you have a lot of patience, skin, and time.
