240 and 211/311 plow

I dragged home a 311 Fast Hitch 3-14 plow a couple weeks ago, with the plan to remove the rear bottom and use it with my 240U. From the 2nd bottom forward, the 211 & 311 are nearly identical.

I had to drop a bottom just to get it light enough to lift off the trailer. Since then I have replaced/tightened a bunch of bolts, and fabricated the 2-bottom brace. It's ready to go.

Yesterday, I got the manual for the 211/311. No mention of the 240, even for the 211 plow. Smallest tractor they list for this plow is a 300.

The 240 has the large fast hitch points, and is rated as a "2-plow" tractor, so it *should* work. Right?

Must be an early 240, or has a 230 fast hitch on it. The 240 is supposed to have the large points.

I know mine does. I put the drawbar up against a Super C drawbar, and the 240's were definitely 1/2" thicker.

Luckily this won't be a waste if it doesn't work. I can just put the 3rd bottom back on and let Dad use it on his 656.

I have a first year 1958 Farmall 240 with the s/n being 13xx and it has a large point fast hitch with the original drawbar. Do you have a lower s/n then that as I believe all 240's (don't know about the International Utility 240's) have the large point fast hitch as that is the only one shown in the 240 parts catalog, Hal.

Matt, Post back an update after you stick it in some soil as I have a 211 for my Farmall 240 as well. I have another IHC publication along with an Operator's Manual for an IH 209 2-bottom moldboard plow which lists the Farmall and Utility 240's as suitable tractors for that model. I believe the 209 and 309 originally were fast hitch model plows with both small and large points which was later replaced with the models 209A and 309A which were basically 3-point plows and convertible to fast hitch tractors with a conversion kit. After looking for a few years for a large point 209 (I know that they do exist) but could only find them with the small points. I too have a 211 which I plan on using with my Farmall 240 row crop tractor on club plow days and would be very interested in your experience with yours in some dirt, Hal.

Hal, Absolutely no reason why the 211 plow won`t work on a 240. I pulled my 2-14" 211 behind my Farmall 240 and it works just fine. Wouldn`t want to have 16" bottoms on it though, the 14`s make her snort enough. My Farmall 340 pulls my 2-16" 211 and is a good match in our heavy clay. By the way, 240`s didn`t come from the factory with small point sockets, at least in the parts books there aren`t multiple part numbers for large or small sockets in the 240 section. The sockets from a 230 will fit right on a 240 fast hitch bail. It`s not out of the realm of possibility that a customer could have special ordered a 240 to come with small sockets if the farmer had all small point implements already. Or a dealer could have swapped sockets at the dealership too.

Thanks Mark for the info on the 211 working fine with a 240. I have gotten my Farmall 240 all back together and very happy with it as I think it turned out really well. After being torn down for three years it started right back up and runs just great. Rustyfarmall cleaned, overhauled and rebuilt the carburetor and somehow he found the "sweet spot" with his initial settings as I can't seem to make it any better. Hope to see you at the RPRU this June if you make it there, Hal.

Good to hear your 240 is back up and running Hal. I bet she`s a thing of beauty. I`m still on the fence if I`m going to Red Power or not. I have a hotel room reserved if I can find the time to get there...

I'll let you know how it worked if and when it happens.

Right now, I'm waiting for a friend of mine to turn me a new control shaft for the tel-a-depth quadrant. The small end that holds the handle twisted off in my hands. Poor design, only lasted 55 years. I welded it but it broke again when I tried to put it back together.

The ground out at the farm might not be a good place to test this, though. It's tough plowing ground, always has been. The 240 doesn't have any ballast either, so it may just be embarrassing.
