Farmall 400 power steering

Farmall 400 with Behlen PS pump. PS does not work unless a hydraulic lever is moved bypassing system. How do I adjust bypass valve? Any ideas??

Need a little more info on your problem I'm guessing you have a Factory Power steering set up.
Was it already on there or did you have it put on. I have worked on half a dozen or so that when they were installed they didn't put the plug in the steering post to give the steering the 2.5 gpm priority.

Your have a priority system on the 400. That means the power steering should get 3 gal PM first. But if the flow control valve is not working right you end up with what you have. Could be the spring for the flow control valve is bad the valve spool is worn bad, stuck, or a worn orifice. No adjusting to do here. If the valve body is worn bad not much One can do but replace the whole valve. Need to take the flow control valve apart and check it out. This is why I never used a flow control on older SM SMTA.

It is a factory pump. I just did complete overhaul on engine and replaced clutch and TA. Power steering worked before the work was started. Replaced the hoses to power steering pump. Like I said before the PS works when a hydraulic lever is moved wither forward or back. That leaves me to think it is a control problem but do not know for sure.

I know it is factory set up. It is a priority system if the flow divider doe not work right no oil to steering. But when you move a hydraulic lever and stop the oil it has to go to the steering. If you had a cylinder on that valve the steering still would not work. So I say flow divider, dirt, bad spring. bad ball or seat, o ring.
