Super C oil

ok - I was told early on to use only IH low-ash straight 30wt. That was years ago, and I'm gathering that a lot has changed with oil. I started using Mobil Delvac straight 30, but this is getting hard to find and costs a mint. Of course, 5-30 is everywhere and maybe would be OK, but what about the low-ash part? Comments appreciated - who else is running what?
Thanks
Cliff

10-30 or 10-40 from a good brand is just fine. Diesel grade 15-40 is also very fine for summer use. They have pretty low ash, and are not a problem.

Unless you are running it hard every day, forget low ash, you can probably forget it anyway. I use 15W40 as do many on this forum. Oil is so much better than when your tractor was built that what you use is not important. Just get detergent.

Mine has Pennzoil 10W40 in it right now, the next oil change it will get whatever name brand oil that is on sale.

Let's talk about this detergent thing. I've heard that if you haven't been using detergent oil traditionally - and then put it in - you'll loosen up a lot of old crud in there resulting in problems. Was the old Exxon XDS detergent or non? If I can use 15-40 diesel oil in it, I'm good to go because I use it in a bunch of other stuff around here. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Use the 15w-40 and don't look back. Keep an eye on it and if the oil starts looking dirty quickly, change it and the filter, but really, I doubt if you will have any problems.

If your worried about it being full of sludge it doesn't take long to drop the oil pan and remove the valve cover and scrub them out, most of the crud will be under the valve cover, valves probably could use adjusting anyway while it's apart

Low ash oil is most important in the later 6-cylinder tractor engines. Not so much with an old low-compression letter series tractor.

Detergent or non-detergent... Ultimately I don't think it's going to make a hill of beans difference.

The only thing I would NOT use is a 5-weight oil. There are still plenty of 10-weight options out there.

I am with 504. Buy what's on sale. It really doesn't matter.
Any oil today is far superior to what they had back then.

another vote for 15w-40 diesel rated oil.
I run it in all my old stuff.

Don't know how involved you want to get, but like the other poster said, a SC is easy to pull the pan and valve cover.
I do that on every old one I get. Valves always need adjusting.
(normal maintenance that is usually neglected)
I always pull the pan too if it is stamped and easy on a model.
Sludge, muck, random engine parts.....I need to know myself that all is ok in there.....
