got a old H to plow snow and drag fire wood .what engine oil do you guys recommend.anyone try the new high mileage oils in old tractors?
also Ive heard of 30wt nondetergent, but what is 30wt HD? does it mean high detergent, or heavy duty? thinking about 15/40 rotillo. I know its for diesles.but still good oil.

Non-detergent is recommended for the Lift-All unless you are using a regular hydraulic oil & do not want to mix the fluid between implements.
30 HD is "High Detergent" oil from the past.
Use any good detergent oil from today; it will be far superior to yester-years oils. Multi-viscosity oils (10-30, 15-40, etc.) will do the job just fine.

!5w-40 Rotella is what I use in my Farmall H snow pusher. Works good year-round.

The hydraulic belly pump can use either the Case-IH Hy-Tran, or the universal 303 hydraulic fluid from your local farm store.

Modern multiviscosity oils do not contain zinc which is a lube for flat tappet cams(which all old Farmalls have)so if you use one make sure to get a zinc additive for the oil.If you read the labels some manufacturers offer oils still with zinc.I use Amsoil products that still have zinc. Good luck. Matt Geisewite

I use the common O'Reilly's brand 20W-50 oil in all my stuff. O'Reilly's brand is made by Valvoline. Non detergent oil is a thing of the past and I have NEVER used it in any of my tractors and I have had many tractors. Have 4 1940 Hs on the place plus 20 plus others

Oil didn't have much zinc in it when these tractors were built. Other anti-wear additives are being used to replace ZDDP. I wouldn't mess up the chemistry of any oil by adding magic elixirs unless I had a darn good reason to do so.

The 15w-40's today are actually designed for mixed fleet use, i.e. you can use them in gas or diesel. It may have additives for soot control that gas doesn't need, but it does no harm.

I buy Rotella by the barrel and it goes in every engine I have here.

except the lawnmower....its doesn't like it too much
