H Rear tires

One of the rear 4 ply tires, 75% tread left but extremely weatherchecked, went flat. (Tire age is probably older than you and me combined) After pumping out the calcium chloride, tire pretty much crumpled. They put on a new temporary tire, 11.2 - 38 (same size as old).

My thought is the new tire looks skinnier than the old, did the sizes "decrease" over the years? I should add this new 6 ply tire was made overseas. I am seriously considering updating to 12.4's, but at an additional $175 per tire, is it worth it? (This 11.2 tire, if I keep it, is running me $445, installed.) The only reason for me to go with 12.4's is for additional lifting height on the blade with the saginaw hitch. For those of you who by chance have experience with 11.2 vs 12.4, how much more lifting height do you gain with the larger tire? Your comments are appreciated - thanks!

By the way, rims are 10".

3 years ago I replaced the old rotten 12.4 x38 tires with new(Chinese BKT) 11.2s.Hate em.They were about $200ea cheaper than the firestone 12.4.Every time I walk by it it pi$$e$ me off.....This is on a Super H.

I can't remember what the height difference is, but I would definitely go with the 12.4's. You'll never be sorry. They just make the tractor look like a tractor. I personally would go with Firestone's, but I know sometimes they are priced above the budget.

In answer to your original question, the old tires have probably stretched at bit over time. There is also probably less rubber in the new tire. The height difference for your blade will be negligable, you wont gain much hieght at best.one or 2 " max. Many years ago the tire industry changed tire sizes.I dont remember if an H is before or after the change.

The 11.2x38 is the equivelant of the original 10x38, that was mounted on a 9" rim. If your rims are 10" wide, you need the 12.4x38.

Delta, Very appropriately stated - I'm with you on the Firestones and those smaller 11.2's belong on a Super C at most, Hal.

i put 13.6 x38 on my H, needed new rims to so i used 12 rims ( if i remember right without looking) anyway i know they are a 1 inch narrower rim then tire called for , lets tire baldge some looks like original tires did ,put 6.00 x 16 on fronts, my H gets enough tracton w/ 1-weight & 50 gal. of fluid on each side to pull the front wheels off ground in plowed ground pulling 9 foot drag harrow, i also just put 8 ply 13.6 x38 on my M , used factory rims & they where so hard to get on & then bead up on them rims ill never do it again , must be because of the rim being so much different then the new ones & narrower , looks ok but if i did it again i would have bought the new rims & sold the old ones , that where in great condition , dont know about there , around here 13.6 x 38 4-ply are the cheapest , the narrower the rim the more hiegth youll gain , propper rim size would only gain width not much heigth

IH allowed a rim 1 inch less than the tread width, but a tire with the same tread width as the rim fits better. The tread width of the 11.2 tire is 10 inches, for 12.4 11 inches.

I agree with Delta Red. I put on a set of 12.4's on my H a few yrs ago, sprung for rims too. If its in your budget get the 12.4's. If its not & you can get by for a while, wait & buy em later.

I've got 2 Farmall Hs. Both have the 12.4x38 tires mounted on 10 inch rims. They look good. Tires do not squat or bulge.

Thanks all of you for the inputs. Well, we bit the bullet and went with Firestone 12.4's. Yep, looks a lot better than the temporary "overseas" tire. Two new tires & tubes, mounted - got them from local tire guy, his prices were better than the on-line retailers - and - the money stays local.

I had to do the same thing about 2 or 3 years ago. New tires and tubes amounted to about 2/3rds of what I felt the H was worth, but without decent rear tires, the old H would have been worthless.
