450 ignition advance

I have always set my advance by trial and error, but lately my 450 lp seems to try kick back against the starter motor; thus I am forced to "read the directions":( those two indentations drilled into the front pulley--are they the timing marks? Does the first one denote initial advance and the second indicate top dead center for the #1 cylinder? Thanks to all in "advance" :) Hugh

Probably have 5 notches on the rear flange of the pulley. Turn engine in normal rotation a full turn and the last mark to the pointer is TDC. Looking from the front back the next mark clockwise from the TDC is what the LP should advance to at full throttle if checking with a light. That's 16 degrees BTDC. Engine stopped time is set at TDC.
Other notches are 25, 30 and 40 degrees BTDC. They are not used for a LP engine.

May peak in the distributor and make sure the points plate is not sticking or gummed up. Maybe it's not able to get all the way back to 0 degrees for starting.

I mean the points cam, make sure the points cam is able to move freely for the advance. Points plate moving is a car thing.

Thanks, Centex. I will check that. So the distributor has a centrifigal advance on it? I honestly forgot all about that. I'll check to make sure that it is going back to zero, because that would make a lot of sense. How is the weather out there...are you anywhere near Hillsboro, in Hill County? I was over there last week. Hugh
