Rod cap locking tabs

I've rebuilt a few M's and 400 engines and I've always wondered about those crazy bend over locking tabs on the rod cap bolts. Are they really worth a darn? The ones on the Super M I'm doing now have been bent back and forth so many times they're snapping off. I've never seen how they work anyway.

Lord only knows if they are really necessary because who knows the stretch of the bolt on those old girls, but I normally put new ones on unless old ones are really in good shape. I will say, I never recall a rod bolt coming loose or breaking on those engines. I always disliked the cotter key, slotted nuts worse.

I have always gotten new ones from Case IH. They aren't cheap. I think I have an extra set around.

Not sure about these engines but they are a must in the air cooled vw engines I rebuild. These tractors are much lower rpm so it's a little less critical I guess. Don't mention anything about Locktight. Folks go crazy when you say that.

I just left them there on my 400 and did not even bother to bend them back after torqueing, once a bolt is torqued it has to be good is my thinking.
just like a cotter pin in a tie rod or ball joint on the older vehicles, its there for safety, or to cover some azz, or just for looks, but it makes me feel better when they are installed.

ive worked for several engine machine shops & learned from the old timers, most are gone now but they always told me if it didnt need it the factory wouldnt have put them there . makes sense if you are selling a product would you put anymore money in it then needed , they put them tabs there for a reason

I think you're right. I've always put them back on. I'm just thinking out loud I guess. I guess little things like that is why these old birds have lasted as long as they have.

A lot of the military engines used safety wire that was twisted. The Air Force had a tool for doing it and it was quicker and neater. Some called it lacing wire. We did it by hand some were V12 engines used in Tanks. Hal
