706 transmission

I'm at wits end trying to get my 706 to shift in to reverse like it should. I have replaced all the bushings in the trans cover put new pins in the rod with the turn buckle on it the double ball joint is good. Little to no slop from shifter to top plate. I put new woodruff key in the range shift fork. The next thing on my list is the shaft and slide coupler(I'm trying every thing I can to prevent splitting the tractor). I guess my question is that I have seen a ad in the farmworld to fix the shifting problems in
the 06 tractors. Would a new top plate help my problem or is that just snake oil for a worn out tractor????? Or is there something else I could try?????

Have you checked the reverse shift fork. It is easy to inspect, just remove the side plate on the left side. The lower end of the fork can break off. Also check how much end play you have between the gears & shift collar on the reverse idler shaft. Have seen the rear thrust washer wear into the housing. Collar can't fully engage the gear. Sounds like you have checked the top end & cover pretty well. Any excess wear in the linkage will make it hard to get reverse. A worn bushing in the shift lever and the pin it pivots on looses travel needed to shift into the gears.

My shift fork is good. Is there a speck for how much clearance should be where the fork rides in the collar? They don't seem wore I will take the side cover off and look in there again. I never thought about a thrust washer being gone. It seems that I can get it in to gear when I sneak up on it but it takes a couple tries. Would there be a chance that the splines on the collar and or shaft are wore down.

Your problem is probably the rev. shifter shaft and maybe the shifter fork. When people start slamming them the little woodworf key way gets beat out and you end up with slop , and with the geometry a little adds up to a lot . Sooo pull the deck and unhook all lines and linkage pull the side cover off and pull the shifter cover and then see if the rev . shifter fork moves on the shaft . This has to be TIGHT no movement at all.

What is your tractor doing? I had a 1066 that felt like it went too far and popped out of gear. I had trouble keeping it in reverse. I looked in an inspection plate on the side behind the clutch pedal under my feed if I remember right and there was a washer on a shaft that was gone. An quick fix but had to split the tractor to get to it.
