Hello, Looking at buying a 1086. Why Did International put in a 414 cid motor in the 1086 tractor? They put the 436 cid motor in the 986 and the 1486 tractors. I do not know much about the 1086 tractors. Are they a good tractor? Thank you and have a good day.

IH put the 436cid in the 986 because they had problems with the sleeves in the 414cid with out a turbo and did not want the 986 same as 1086.

All of the 400 series engines were prone to cavitation erosion not just the 414 but that was some what cured by adding coolant filters. They are a good engine and they were also used in the 1066 and 915 combines. They were not inter cooled from factory just turboed.

the 414cid sleeves in the 966 was not cavitation it was cracking. yes cavitation was a problem with the 400 engine.

There was no difference in cavitation between a 414 and a 436. Same sleeve, same bore size, different stroke. The reason for using the 436 in the 986 was to improve fuel economy of a non turboed engine. It also used a different injection nozzle for that same reason. Don't worry, I asked plenty of questions about that when they introduced that line of tractors. Us guys in the shop had to field a lot of questions from customers.

You beat me to it Pete I was going to say the same thing that they all use sleeve part# A77692.Myself I have never heard of 9's cracking sleeves as a problem.

I stand corrected; the 1086 was not intercooled. These are old tractors with many hours on them. Proper preventative maintenance will keep them in service for a few more years.
