I bought a 560 diesel today went looked at it with a little ether it fired right up payed the man went home to get a trailer went back started up same procedure shut it off went to unload it wont start just cranks get some smoke out of exhaust when cranking any suggestions

whats with starting fluid?those 282 engines start good with glow plugs when everything is in spec. starting fluid is a no-no.
pretty hard to say what the problem is with little info, maybe just a low battery??? they will not start if not cranking fast enough. whats the history on it?

Did you use the Glow Plug?
They are the only way to get them started (ether will make them go, but destroy them in the same wiff. The detonation from ether overloads bearings and shocks ring lands. Controlled ether from a factory system is vastly different than just spraying it in the intake. Jim

Every think of what the wind chill is rideing on that trailer on the way home...might have old #2 fuel and have jelled on you. Let the thing set till tomorrow and try t again.

I don't know a lot about it just what I seen today I put 2 new batteries in today when I bought it it hadn't ben started since last spring I don't know if the glow plugs are working none of the gauges seem to be working I got it from a local collector that usually doesn't sell but he had 3 diesels and a gas he let me have choice of 3 one was a basket case gas he kept and the other diesel he didn't really know a lot either real nice and honest gentleman gave me a great deal

I don't know if the gplugs are working I just wanted to get it home and check it all out went to gat it off trailer and it would just crank

pull the air cleaner cup off, I have seen them full of water and freeze and you have a no- go situation.

wind chill has no affect on gelling. if the wind chill is -40 going down the road but the air temp is -10. the fuel will not be any colder than -10.
the wind will lower the temp faster but it can't low the temp below the air temp.
fuel is an inanimate object which is not affected by wind chill. wind-chill is the temperature we "feel" because of moisture evaporating from our skin. The heat to evaporate the moisture comes from our skin and causes the temp to drop to the "wind-chill" temperature right at the skin surface. That's why an inanimate object
(something not alive) will not "feel" wind-chill.

So your glow plug gauge isn't working either? I recently bought one myself and everyone recommends not using ether on these 282s. (but there are others that say they do it and no problems). With the head issues I've heard about, I'm content not using ether (and haven't had much problems not using ether).

Does it have a block heater? If so plug it in. If not, you need to hold the glow plugs on for 3-4 minutes (no joke). Maybe longer. You could also put a heat lamp on the block too if you don't have a block heater.

But, you may have done all that already. If so, how are the fuel filters? If it's below freezing where you are, I'd definitely recommend a block heater or some other heat to warm up the block before getting too far into other causes.
