Im making progress on my 26' regular had to cut out the crank, rods, and pistons with a cutting torch. But 2 of the 4 sleeves are cracked down the sides. ive tried my sleeve puller and heat but cannot get them to budge at all. any ideas? I was thinking about trying to get a machine shop to cut them out of the block? I was afraid of busting the block so ive backed off for a while.

Don"t know the first thing about this, but I was walking out of the supermarktet, and I thought I saw a chiller of dry ice for sale. Would that work? Put the sleeve puller on, crank it, then put dry ice inside the sleeves, might really shrink them and pop them loose?

Smith, When you opened it up what do you see??
If sleeves inside were rusted bad than I would try to push the pistons out with the sleeves.
Lots of spray PB and let it soak in some. If you removed the rod caps than the crank could have stayed where it was! I have pushed them out and split the sleeve with a angle grinder and saved the pistons and rods. New rings and sleeve and your going the other direction. It took along time to get set up you have to give it some time to get free. Lots of PB and sometimes heat.

its was soaking for 4 years or so, everything internally was beyond use crankshaft was rusted solid to rods even had to split the rod and rodcaps with a 4 lb sledge and a chisel and 2 rod caps broke. ive worked on several old engines but this is the WORST by far. I have a 300 ton press but am afraid of breaking the block when I press them out even with heat? ive tore it down this far id hate to break it now. also I haven't gotten the cam out yet ive heated and hit and used air hammer but it hasn't budged yet??? thanks for the help thus far

I have a 30 ton press and that's what I use to get sleeves out. I don't even waste my time on a puller for the pre-39 stuff. theres been a couple times ive maxed out that press right before it went boom and the sleeve popped out. yes, some of them are stuck in there that tight. Ive never damaged a block doing it that way

Like OldF20, I use a press too, although mine is only a 20 ton. I made a fixture that will hold the engine block upside down in my press without having to remove the studs. Using this fixture I am able to press out piston and sleeve together and then press the piston out of the sleeve.

Here is a picture of it in use on a 10-20 engine. I turned a puck on my lathe to fit the bottom of the sleeve and then cut out a notch to clear the rod, that way I am able to put force directly on the bottom of the sleeve. I have used it to press out sleeves of F20, F30, 10-20 and even a 22-36 engine. It works pretty good and I have never broken a block although I have almost maxed out my 20 ton press while getting the sleeves to break loose!!

D21,Im not the smartest person on this board but Ive restored a dozen of these pre 39 motors that were stuck bad,Im only going to give one advice and that is be carefull with the tourch.Ive had frozen bolts and other parts that needed some heat, and the heat did work, but a few seconds later hear a definiate crack and end up with a cracked block.I have a friend that has a IH sleeve puller and its never failed,I also have a F12 motor apart now that I freed up that actually had a broken piston in it from previous years, even though it was loose I couldnt get it to turn over,I took it to a machine shop and they pressed every thing loose, charged me 20.00 bucks, and now every thing is good
