I guess the differential was on the verge of seizing up when I parked it 2 years ago. It was working at that time or I wouldn"t have been able to turn into the shed. I figure water must run down the shifter right into the spider assembly although the shifter and rails aren"t rusty just gunked up. Take a look at the pictures, there was a pile of rust between the ends of the brake shafts. I sucked out the rust and soaked it down with penetrating fluid but it won"t free up. I have two questions, is 75 dollars a good price for a used differential? and is it possible to remove the trans cover without taking off the hydraulic/steering support and the seat/battery box? Ooops, I was wrong, one more question, where can I get a gasket for the cover? Thanks

It broke free after driving it on the pavement back and forth a little at a time. I know I have to take it apart but that can wait till warm weather returns. Thank God and thank you all!

I say it is a whole lot less work and more productive to split the tractor. Sling all the parts including battery box and steering post assembly from above and back rear out. You will find other reasons for doing so when you get it apart and be glad you did split it. Don't have to, just the way I would do it and have done many.

Buy a roll of gasket paper and make one. You just need scissors, a pencil, and a punch (which you can make out of tubing).

Nebraska Kirk is correct. Go for the used Diff if it is also not rusty. Were it mine I would put black RTV on the cover as a gasket (thin rib of goo around perimeter, and circle bolt holes) I also use anti seize on the bolts when assembling to prevent water entry that way. If you use a gasket and are lucky, the new gasket will be nice and flat and not dried and puckered. If puckered, it will be a pain to get into shape to assemble. Jim

You will have to remove the seat & battery box and the hydraulic reservoir/valve assembly before the top cover can be removed.
$75 sounds like a reasonable price for a used differential.
I think you can still get the top cover gasket through your local CaseIH dealer.

Are you about finished rebuilding those magnetos Kirk? I haven't heard from you since I dropped them off. I'm not in a hurry, I just don't want to forget about them.
