What are your thoughts on a 2096 Case/IH ? How do they compare as far as weak points and power is concerned vs. 986/1086 IH? Thanks ,DTK.

Just remember its a case no comparison to a RED tractor the reds ones outsold them 2 to 1 just saying, I do have a 986 it would be a little smaller, go with the 1086 resale will be better than the case also.

I put many a hour on a 1086 not a bad tractor but they have their issues. The 2096 is several years newer than a 1086. The case will have a much more roomy and comfortable cab and way better air conditioning. The 1086 has a shifting linkage problem when they get some wear where the case doesn't. If both tractors are of similar shape I'd take the case hands down.

The 86 series tractors have there faults. The doors open backwards, shifting isn't the best, ect, but after working for many years for a case IH dealer the thought of having to work on a case power shift makes me a bit ill! There isn't a piece in the IH transmission, TA, or rear end that you cant get from case IH or aftermarket, unlike the case powershift that many parts have been discontinued. In my opinion case had a great engine with the 504 but everything behind it spoiled there tractors. 400 series IH engines are the small block chevy of diesels, parts are everywhere new and used. I myself have two 1086's a 1066 and a 1070. The 1070 hasent been out of the shed in years. Im sure many will disagree but that's my thoughts. GO RED!

Here's an excerpt of a post made by the late Hugh McKay comparing a Case 2096 to an IH 886. Keep in mind this is an 886 compared to a 2096. If the 2096 couldn't keep up with an 886, it sure can't hang with a healthy 986, let alone a 1086:

In the early 90s I was helping a friend with his spring cropping. He had four tractors a 666D, 2- 886 and a 2096 CaseIH. One of the 886 was the early production with 360 US engine and the other had 358 German engine. The 666 had as much hp and torque as the the German 358 in the 886. The other 886 with the 360 US engine would walk all over the 2096 CasIH. He had a new 16' heavy tandem disk, and was raving about this new 2096 and it's power shifts. I said," It is good that it has the power shifts, as it has no power." He said as he pushed me out of seat and to right of cab," Let me show you how to drive this thing." He started out at about 3.5 mph, and I standing on the right shifted the power shift up to about 5.5 mph, bingo the Case died before he could get his foot on the clutch. He said,"What did you do that for." I said, " Because the 886 was pulling the disk at 5.5 mph and rarely ever using the TA." With that he jumped out into his pickup and burried it in the plowed field. I had to tow him out. He apparently went to the house and phoned the CaseIH dealer and gave him an ear full. And why wouldn't he, his two best tractors being the 666 and the early 886, were also the oldest. A few days later the dealer asked me what I had done to get him so stirred up. I said, " I just showed him reality."

The 2096 is a great tractor for light work (cutting and baling hay, spraying) but is worthless for doing heavy work (tillage) and is acceptable for medium work (planting). It is only rated at 120 hp. where as the 986 is 106 hp. and the 1086 is 130 hp. In theory the 2096 should out pull the 986 but it won't the 986 is around 11,000 lbs. with out added weight the 2096 weighs just a little bit over that with add weight. And the 1086 will run away and hide from both the 986 and 2096. So in my mind the 986 or 1086 would be the way to go if you find a guy that is good with IH tractors to fix the shifter issues. If you get either of the IH's I would recommend dropping this man a line and have him explain things to you.
