I just recently bought my grandpa"s 1952 Super C and it has not been run in many years. The disconnected dead 6V battery is rotated in its case so when connected would tie the positive terminal to the starter. I think Farmalls are positive ground. Is there a way for me to check whether or not this tractor has been modified for negative ground? The previous owner"s son said he had tried unsuccessfully to start it some years ago & I"m wondering if he may have connected it wrong. So, if the battery was improperly connected what kind of damage may have occured? Both the generator (Delco Remy model 1100004) and the starter (Delco Remy model 1107093) appear to be original. The replacement voltage regulator is Autolite, 15V, 25A. Thanks for your help.

The voltage regulator your SC now says it's been converted to 12 volts. Ground polarity now could be either way, depending on the whim of whoever did the conversion. (From the factory it was 6 volt, positive ground)
A couple ways to determine polarity:
1 - Check the voltage regulator. Some (not all) VR's are designed for only one polarity. So ground polarity MAY be marked on the cover.
2 - Drop in a good battery and connect it for POSITIVE ground. Now turn on the ignition or lights. If the ammeter deflects to the left (indicating discharge) it is wired positive ground. However if it deflects to the right it is negative ground.

Once you've determined the ground polarity and completed your wiring, good practice is to polarize the generator before the 1st start: With the battery installed and the engine stopped, briefly jumper the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator. Soon as you've made contact your generator is polarized.
