cork carb floats

Did I read some where, possibly on this forum that cork carb floats can be sealed using shellac? Has anyone tried shellac as a sealer? I know it works well in some gasket applications, so thought I would try it on a float that is in poor condition. Thanks, Joe

I know the old JD spec for the coating on cork floats called for "horse glue." GOOD LUCK!

Shellac is made into a liquid from powdered Bug juice with the use of alcohol. And as such will dissolve readily in today"s gasoline. Gas tank sealer would be realistic, Jim

Jim right on the money. Best options is an epoxy based tank coating or similar. a thinned, epoxy or urethane clear coat would work also.

Ethanol is an aggressive solvent, believe it or not, and yet we drink it! Go figure.........

I tried to seal the cork float on my MD carb with RedKote. Worked for a few months, then turned into a gooey messs. Replaced float with updated neoprene.

brass floats are made for all carbs, back through and including the Ensign carb design. It is a very simple process to solder the float arm onto the brass ensign carb float available from Fordson house. Rice won't sell brass because Gordon felt it wasn't "correct". Either way, epoxy or brass........your choice.

Thanks much Tom, Didn't know brass floats were available for the old timers. Think that is the route to go. Joe

I have good luck using "Northern" brand gas tank sealer. The trick is to get the float completely dried out before you dip it. After you dip it let it dry for a couple of days before you use the float. When you are done with the tractor drain all the gas out of the bowl so the float isn't soaking in gas. We have a couple Hart Parr floats that we sealed 4 years ago and are still working great.
