Open/Closed Hydraulics?

Help, please. I'm trying to use a Worksaver Post Pounder on my Farmall 460. The pounder manual says I must determine if I have an "open" or "closed" hydraulic system. Which do I have? How do I tell the difference? What IS an "open" and what IS a "closed" hydraulic system? Thanks!

You have an open hydraulic system. In an open system oil is always circulating. In a closed system, oil is supplied on demand.

It's not something you can tell by looking. You kinda have to know on a tractor-by-tractor basis.

Before the mid 1960's there weren't a lot of closed center hydraulic systems out there. I almost think the Deere 10 or 20 series may have been the first ones to use closed center on a large scale basis.

IH's first widespread use of the closed center hydraulics didn't come until the early 1980's on the last of the 86 series and the 2+2's.

Now. Make sure you have the system connected up properly

If you have the return going to the hydraulic pump your going to damage the tractors hydraulic pump or gears turning the pump.
