The paint around the gas cap of my gas tank is crinkling and peeling off right around where the opening is. Today I noticed what looked like large staining radiating out from where the paint is shrivelled up. Any ideas of what is causing this? It looks like I will lose the paint on my gas tank. The cap itself has what I think is a fuel indicator but I couldn't find exactly what it is in the parts book. It is right in the cap, about 4 inches high with a glass front. The glass is cracked so I am wondering if this has anything to do with the paint deteriorating.
My tractor is sitting and there hasn't been fuel spilled on to the tank at all.
Thanks to all.

Yeah, gas fumes are leaking out and reactivating the paint.

The rubber gasket is leaking, and/or the fuel filler neck has been damaged in the past allowing a leak.

That cap you have is the optional cap with the fuel gauge in it. It can be considered correct, but not really original. The correct cap is a short simple cap with a hole in the center, but those leak and are dangerous.

You want the new style triple baffle cap for safety and to protect your paint. www.ihgascap.com.

The vapors coming out of the tank will do this. The best fix for me has been to clearcoat the tank after repainting. This is similiar to an automobile finish. I have clearcoated paints that were not intended to be clearcoated over and have not had a problem, like paint from TSC and etc.

I have a new cap on my repainted Super A. The mistake I made was painting everything up to the very top of the fuel opening. Base-Clear PPG Omni paint. The fumes work their way under the paint and go downward. Most of the peeling is hidden by the cap, but next time I am masking the filler neck off.
