460 wont stay running

Started the 460 gas for the first time today in probably 4 months. It ran good at half choke for about 30 seconds then died, i tried to start it again but the engine just turned over. Thought maybe flooded it so i let it sit for an hour but it still just turns over. Fuel tank is full of gas, additive was added when parked before winter. I unscrewed the carburetor drain plug and just a little bit of gas came out, like a half teaspoon at most. I then started to unscrew the outside flange nut that holds the fuel line to the carb and before i got it all the way unscrewed gas started to run at a good stream. My question is... do I have a problem in my carb? shouldn't gas be running freely out of that drain plug on the bottom of carburetor? I havn't checked for spark but that shouldn't be the problem since it ran fine for 30 seconds correct??? Thanks for any help!!!

There is a screen in that fitting I bet it is plugged. Shut off the fuel at the tank and clean the line and screen at the carb fitting. Also check for clean sediment bowl. Jim

Float may be hung up holding the seat closed. If the screen is clean, tap on the carb with a large screwdriver handle & it may drop.

Do you have the electric shut off valve in the carb? They can stick from sitting. Or the needle has stuck on the float.

Don't forget to blame ethanol and external_link for the problem!

LOL, just kidding. It's the painkillers talking.

Seriously the float simply stuck from sitting so long. It happens. It has happened since IH introduced the updraft style carburetor in 1939.
