H jumpingout of 5th gear

Yes Common. Farmers dragging the shifter fron 4th to 5th with no intention to match speeds wears the splines that couple the direct (fifth gear is not a gear) connection between input and output shafts.
The splines are on the 4th 5th slider, and the input shaft. Both are probably in need of replacement. A worn tip and pivot on the shifter lever, and worn or bent 4th 5th shifter fork can also give grief, as can a worn pilot bearing between those two shafts (sometimes called an intermediate bearing.) Bates Equipment (Indiana) may have shafts and sliders. Used are hard to find as they are also usually in tough shape. Jim

I have used shift rails and forks and gears that are in usable shape. If you decide to open it up and are interested in used parts just send me an email once you find out what you need. It is not that hard to open up an H transmission, just takes an hour or two to remove all of the things that sit on top of the deck.

Been there and done that.

In my case the front bearing supporting the slider gears was worn allowing the entire assembly to drop down. Worked fine in all the other gears. I "fixed" it by bending the shift rail enough to hold it in gear. The motor was about shot in this H so I ran it like that, about 2 years, till the motor failed.

Mine jumped out of 5th. The problem was a broken spring thta holds the ball into the detent on the shift rail. The gear was also half stripped. Part of this problem is there is way less contact on 5th gear rather than 1-4.

My dad had the same problem on an H years ago. Fixed it by bending the shift rail as you said. It ran fine for years after that. Al
