left axel housing is leaking oil can I pull the housing and axel back to clean and install new gasket with out pulling axel all the way out do you have to remove pto and take nut off??

I have got lucky a couple of times and went in the PTO hole and loosened the bolt on the bull gear and slid the axel out a half inch and cleaned every thing up good and cut the gasket at the top and put it together that way. Just use a little RTV where you cut the gasket.
