Where was the orignal factory location for the word "Diesel"? Was it on the side of the fuel tank or on the side of the hood.I have seen it on both location for the 1954 SMTA Diesel.

Probably going to get different answers. Like Jim said people that have looked at the IH blueprints say on the hood. Some claim some were put on the tank. Some pictures of early tractors show both ways. Maybe the pictures were pre production type or maybe the factory worker didn't always follow the blueprints if already used to putting diesel on the tank.

According to Guy Fay's Book, the diesel decal is centrally located between the back of the hood and where the hood bead curves up....1/2" below the hood bead.

On my SMTAD, the DIESEL decal was located on the tank. I have a high level of certainty the tractor hadn"t been repainted or restored before and was in original condition. DonO

Centered on the bottom of the hood. The W series has it on the tank because "Standard" is on the bottom of the hood.

Part of the confusion maybe because of pre production pictures like this and the pictures also used in operators and parts manuals.
I'm not going to say some SMTAD tractors didn't get sent to owners with diesel on the tank.
Officially diesel goes on the hood, but you can never be sure about IH.
Notice these pictures just have a SM decal like the owners manual pictures.
