Oily Brake bands

The bands on my H have a lot of life left. One side is really oily. What is the procedure for drying those out?

Search the archive on this forum for brake bands, there have been many discussions. One popular method seems to be to heat the oil away with a propane torch, being careful not to get it too hot and burn it.

Yup. Propane soldering torch. cook the oil out, and yes, don't get them too too hot. After you get the oil cooked out, give them a light burneshing with 100 grit sandpaper, then rinse with brake clean or similar.

I did that to my H bands, and my A bands. they now work great. The real trick is to have a bit of patience and do NOT overheat them. Don't be squirmish either. They will catch fire, and they will smoke. All part of the process.

First cleaning with lacquer thinner can reduce the total oil content, then the heating (after the thinner cries completely) and outside down wind only. Jim

My H had the same problem as yours. Followed the advice from some on this board, removed the bands and drums, replaced the seals, cooked the oil out of the bands with a propane torch and now have great brakes. There are a lot of helpful people here that have a lot of experience. Joe

They will start on fire, but that is not the intent. it is to heat them and drive the oils out, and turn what is remaining into carbon. Do not let them flame sensationally! some is inevitable. But the flame should be such that the band goes out when the torch flame is removed (or reduces to managable intensity and dwindles) overheating is not acceptable. Jim
