I have a SH that kicks bad when I hand crank it. I beleive the timing is just a little advanced. I timed it by sound forward and backwards until it purred just right. To retard it do I turn distributor Clockwise or counter CW when looking at distributor from drivers seat?

Retarding follows the rotation of the rotor the farther in that CW direction the later the spark.
TDC is a good place for the timing when not running (Cranking speeds). If the centrifugal advance is working, it will be a pretty smooth idle. A timing light is needed to assess full advance at rated RPM,
I do not advance the timing more than 3 degrees from TDC due to that same starting issue. Jim
