I bought an engine from an auction today was told it came off an IH baler.I thought it would have been an IH engine but tag reads Continental iy69-54544. It has a 90degree gear box off it with a flat pulley. It is self contained with a radiator and gas tank Why would something IH have a continental engine in it? I am more curios then anything else what I paid for it I could scrap and be OK. THANKS Dan

IH has used several suppliers of engine systems in combines, tractors, construction equipment, and balers. Continental, was one source. Waukesha another. Hercules still another. Jim

Yes IH used Continental engines on balers & pull type combines, 50T & 50W I think (T was twine W was wire), also there were 55 series not sure about them, when you get to 70 & this happened a long time ago well its fuzzy, combines were 64 & 76 (I think again), also they were sold as stationary engines for whatever. I was in set-up & we got in 2 flat cars of balers (46T), 1 had balers & 1 was Wisconsin V4 air cooled engine for baler instead of pto drive. Seems like the IH territory man put a X in the wrong place.

They used I.H. sixes. Either 213 or 233, whichever one is the 3-5/16" bore. Not impossible, of course, but I believe a Continental in this installation would be a rarity.

I had a #46 with a 2 cyl Wisconsin on it, air cooled. Was great at the time I didn't have a tractor with live pto.

Don't scrap it. They aren't making em anymore and they are getting scarce. Some years ago I heard the core charge for a rebuilt was around $1000.

Yesterday there was a 50T baler at the Boonville Indiana show and it had the cub power unit rather than the Continental engine. Could it have been that IH used the continental because the Cub was not made until 1947? My uncle had a 50T and it was not exactly overpowered by the Cub power unit. Joe
