Another timing question for Janicholson

Jim, i was reading your instructions on how to time the M and I have 2 questions:

1. Once i get #1 to TDC, do I just rotate the rotor to the #1 position if its not already there?

2. You said to hook the light up to the lead on the side of the distributor, is that the wire going to the coil? and when i have the light hooked up, what do you mean by the distrbutor top should be turned?

Thanks for the help, as soon as I do this once i wont need help doing it again, the first time is always the hardest...thanks buddy, ~Anthony

not jim, but, you will not rotate the rotor itself, the body of the distributor is what you will be turning to set the timing. the wire you are looking for runs from the distributor to the coil. i prefer to dis-connect that wire from the coil, hook one of of the test light to that wire, then hook the other end to the hot side of your battery. if the points are closed, the lamp will light up. loosen the bolt that holds the distributor down a little so the distributor body will rotate. slowly turn the distributor a little each way and watch the points. you want to set it to where the lamp just starts to dim just before the points open. tighten the bolt when you find that spot. be sure your rotor is still pointing to the #1 spark plug on the distributor cap. now you are timed at tdc.

If the rotor isn't close to #1 at TDC, pull the dist , then rotate it to #1 & put the dist back in. Then time it as the other poster said.
